Review

This movie was funny. Truly funny. Poking fun at everyone as well as showing the immediate defenses people put up when the possibility of racism occurs.

I know that people found this movie offensive because "All Jewish families aren't like that" or "All African Americans don't talk like that" or whatever else they want to complain about because it isn't exactly like their experience. People can't see past themselves and just look at the movie as a stand alone film not a political statement and you find enjoyment out of it.

The premise is sound. In today's world a Jewish man attempting to date a Black woman would be a nightmare that most people would avoid. Their families have crazy amounts of historical references from ancient times to current times that show them they are being persecuted and are the primary victim. Well that common ground doesn't shake people of bad habits. I digress from this hot take.

Jonah Hill was great. This is one of the few films I really enjoy him in. He was funny, he was serious, he showed true character and true character growth in such a short film.

Lauren London was excellent! I think she stands head and shoulders above her co-stars in the way she shows both an attempted appeasement and then a true push back for respect. I would assume that something like this has happened before because the acting showed a ton of grace and character. I know the lines are written, but the presentation of those lines was all her. Well done Lauren.

The ensemble cast is fantastic and brings some really good life to the movie. Presenting multiple different sides of the same aspect and really rounds out the issues.

My Rating

This movie got SLAMMED by everyone, their moms, their uncles, and the cabbie that would take you to the airport. They are all wrong. It was exactly what people should watch in regards to cultural issues and is absolutely funny. 8/10.

Parental Rating

They won't watch this. Crazy amount of language and drugs. A culture they do not understand, and also actor/actresses that don't like. In general, this isn't their cup of tea, but the content itself is outside the scope of what they would find funny. Plus this is a lot of cultural references they wouldn't understand so the jokes would fall flat.
