The Great Unmaking

The Book in 1 Sentence

The rushed finish of a series that had a solid base and great science.

Brief Review

Brian Nelson tells a rich story, but consistently forces elements or people without proper due care of them. What I mean by this is that this hard pressed story issue or characters that play large parts don't really further the story. There are two previous books that presented larger threats, some were used in this book, that took higher priority in this book over larger threats.

Why I Read this book

I read the rest of the series and enjoyed the story being created.

In-Depth Review (Favorite Quotes)

When I wrote the review for [[Five Tribes]], I specifically said that I felt the book was a stop gap for the third book. I was 100% right. The book created a problem half way through the book and that took a higher threat than the original threat which was already very large. I am being vague to avoid plot points, but just know the looming threat from the previous book plays.

I honestly was so frustrated with the way this played out, from plot lines that were setup to be so much bigger and then dropped, plot lines that really had no part in the story being added and created to be bigger than they ever should have been, and just character creation and growth being built and destroyed in 3 chapters. For instance, there is a character that is introduced in this book to add support for another character. The second character is already on the road to recovery from there issue and this other character dies as a "Proof of Concept" that they were fine. It makes no sense and serves no purpose.

Rating

Honestly, there was so much potential for this book series and after the first one I was so excited for it. This book just has such a disappointing finish to the story. Honestly, the ending is so disappointing that I don't want to recommend the book, but that is really just my disappointment talking, not so much the actual quality of the book. This book itself is a 6. The series because of the last 2 books is a 6. A lot of fluff.
