Mortal Kombat (2021)

Cheesy. Just like it was in the 90s and it is intentionally supposed to be that way and that is ok. If you have played any of the current video games or seen videos of them, you know that there is a fountain of blood and comic gore. This movie is right in line with that.

Review

Cheesy. Just like it was in the 90s and it is intentionally supposed to be that way and that is ok. If you have played any of the current video games or seen videos of them, you know that there is a fountain of blood and comic gore. This movie is right in line with that.

The acting is heavy handed and the plot “twists” are very predictable, but I didn’t expect much else. I think the only issue I really have with it is the role they gave Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion) because he is by far my favorite Japanese actor and he is superb, but they script was unkind to his lines.

This movie is good. For being a 2-hour version of the video game. There is no character development, no hard story, there is nothing special, but the fighting is cool and that is what you expect from Mortal Kombat. You aren’t looking for anything special, you are looking for a quick fighting movie and that is what you get.

My Rating

For a true film, overall, I’d give it a 6/10, which as I am writing this is in line with Rotten Tomatoes at the time of this writing, but I’d give it an 8/10 as it did exactly what I wanted from it.

Parental Rating

My mom would really dislike this movie. There is a lot of blood and while it looks fake, my mom's imagination can fill in that gap. The violence is senseless and the language is very minimal. Dad is on board.
