Synopsis

The origin of Christian Bale as Batman where he must face his fears and learn what it means to protect Gotham, learning that sometimes to provide justice, you have to look beyond yourself.

Review

This is a fantastic movie. Christian Bale really set up a world that people loved. His and Gary Oldman's dedication to characters really made this an enjoyable movie to watch acting wise. There isn't a person who doesn't do well in this film that has significant time. Some of those without significant time still do well, but mainly because their face matches the attitude of the character (I am looking at the guy who took Wayne Enterprises public. He looks like a tool and was one).

Nolan being able to make a gritty Batman movie was something that had been dreamed of by Frank Miller as discussed in Batman and Psychology. Batman is not superhuman per say, but he is the John Wick of his universe. A man of sheer determination and concentration. This movie is the beginning of a gritty and broken Batman. The writing just fills your mind with the pain that he has had.

As it is Nolan, there is a lot of practical explosions and that makes this movie. There doesn't feel like a ton of CGI, a ton of items from the early 2000s which means that as I watch this movie almost 20 years after it's release, it still looks wonderful.

My Rating

Christopher Nolan has to be one of, if not only, my favorite director. Between this series, Oppenheimer, and Interstellar you have one of the best movie discography of all times. I firmly believe that this movie is what set Christopher Nolan on his track to make the movies we are continuing to get from him. This is the easiest 8 I have ever given and the only reason it isn't higher is because it is slow to build up the characters. It is an origin movie and they have to create the universe and that typically is very slow.

Parental Rating

Violence is constant with limited or no gore. Language is present, but not heavy words that would make my dad want to leave. No sex, no nudity, and no real family story. While it is about the idea of family legacy, it isn't something that would match my mom's enjoyment of family movies. Dad approves, Mom rejects.
